After spending more than a decade in the public eye,Kim Kardashian Westhas solidified her place as one of the most trendsetting stars in Hollywood. Her love of high-fashion first started at a young age, thanks to momKris Jenner‘s “amazing” closet.
“When I was 16 whenever the time was coming for prom, I would go through my mom’s closet — it was always Mugler, Alaïa, Versace, Chanel — she had the best wardrobe,” Kardashian West, 38, tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s issue. “She would always be really generous and share her things with us, like I always wore her Alaïa dresses to parties.”
The reality star adds, “To this day she saved so much of it and she’s given some really cool pieces to me and my sisters. That was such a fun time.”
But her true fashion awakening came later in life after she first began dating now-husbandKanye West.

“My style has definitely evolved,” she says. “When I met Kanye and he really started to bring me to Paris he introduced me to a bunch of people. I think one of the first people I met were [designers] Riccardo Tisci and Alber Elbaz.”

Kardashian West’s conversations with the industry leaders opened her eyes to the fashion world.
“When I went to Montreal to the Mugler exhibit [in February] or when I went to the Alaïa exhibit with Mr. Alaïa [in 2014], I learned so much along the way from so many of the best people in the world,” she says, adding, “So my appreciation has changed enormously.”

Kardashian West previously called her husbandher biggest style influencewhen she was named one of the most stylish women of 2018 in PEOPLE’s annual Best Dressed issue.
“I really do get all of my inspiration from my husband,” the star told us “He makes my life so easy.”
