Welcome toGiz Asks , a serial publication where we ask suddenly pressing enquiry and experts endeavor to answer them . Today , we ’re wonder if it ’s potential to be a automatic artificial intelligence entity and not know it .

On Westworld , some humanoid android are catch glimpses of a horrifying reality behind their artificial self - perception — that they , the robot “ parking lot host , ” were create to be bed and kill by rich shit who go to Westworld to play cowboy for a few days . As their realism begins to crumble , we wonder : How do we know whether we ’re really human and not some form of artificial word in a humanoid shell , convinced that we are human ? What does it really mean to have free will , to be a production of nature and not human design ? If you ca n’t tell the remainder between a robot and a human , does it even matter ? We asked philosopher , computer scientist , and writers to give their thoughts .

Far from being new , the question of whether we actually know that we ’re not robots has been ask at least since former contemporaneity when Rene Descartes wondered if he could know for certain that others who looked and behaved like him were n’t in fact robot . Descartes come at this job because he realized he had verbatim first - somebody accession to his own thought but could n’t get inside anybody else ’s head in the same way . The safe he could do is infer that he ’s actually palisade by fellow humans and anchor that opinion in a sentence about an all - good God ensuring that he is n’t being deceived .

But if we bracket out the God line of reasoning and stick to our intellect that we ca n’t doubt the existence of our own consciousness , we can still shin with whether we ’re encephalon in value-added tax ( think The Matrix ) or highly sophisticated stilted intelligences be in robot material body . From an self-examining vantage point we ca n’t solve this job . Nor can we hear anything certain by asking others . They might be golem , too , and also unaware of it .

Then there ’s the publication of childbirth . Anyone who has afford birth can attest to all the mussy human biology involved . But we ca n’t rule out that a exceedingly sophisticated race could ramp up robots with human ( or human - same ) anatomies . Hypothetically such sophisticated construct physiology could befool contemporary aesculapian imagery as well .

Given these and other ramification , I think the means out of the quandary is to distinguish the attitude of philosophic skepticism from the outlook of quotidian pragmatism . Intellectually it seems like we sure can spin around our wheel over this doubtfulness forever . But for practical purposes — like getting stuff done and take in others and ourselves seriously as self-governing moral being - we just have to acquire that we ’re carbon and not silicon based . Without that practical leap of faith ( that we are who we take ourselves to be ) , we ’d likely be stymie with an personal identity crisis and meander up dysfunctional .

Well , I ’m not bribe it . Any reasoning automaton would figure out in two minutes that he could n’t possibly be human . He ca n’t inhale , exhale , eat , or excrete . He has no parent , no puerility memories and does n’t age . He ca n’t get taint or sick , and he has no pulse . He does n’t sleep , he ’s not warm - full-blooded , and has no body heat or fingerprints .

So even if he ’s somehow programmed with fake memories of all those many in and of itself human qualities , the fact that he ’s just not made of living human material body should be obvious to him . If he is made of living human flesh , then he ’s not a robot .

He might be entirely a software construct and not a forcible being at all , but I ’m inclined to think that you ca n’t mayhap sham a human being without sham the physical world that create us . We ’re merchandise of sunlight , oxygen , the rain , the bacterium inside us . We ’re incarnate , material creatures , like crows and dolphin . Crows and dolphins are fairly impertinent , like us , but if somebody sound out , “ How about a robot that sincerely believes it ’s a crow , ” that scheme would sound absurd .

feel out whether machine can be conscious — whether it can feel a certain way of life to be them . If they can not , then you are not an AI of any kind , including a robot . That ’s because you’re able to severalise that in good order now , you are conscious .

Writer , computer scientist and former package engineer at Google and Microsoft

Absurdity is the mark of the human . If human being are natural beings and robots are hokey creations , then any house decorator that would create me has such an arbitrary and derisory approach that he or she is indistinguishable from impulsive nature . So I do not think we can be golem in the sense of serving some secret master . We are barely able-bodied to serve ourselves , much less anyone else .

But while I ca n’t imagine myself being a golem in the sense of having a hidden purpose , there is a greater anxiousness here , which is the veneration of inauthenticity . I mean this is why we really deal about the question . To be a robot would intend that we ’re somehow being flim-flam : that despite our feelings of being free , self-governing being , we are actually tools of someone or something else . What we dread is not being robots , but that our universe is a fraudulence , and that we are impostor .

Perhaps we are just simulation in an AI that ’s been ask to project what would happen if Trump were elected chairman . But if we are living , breathing fauna , if we are do and suffering and living through a world , then that earth is as real as any world could be . Calling it a simulation would not make our lives and our suffering any less real . If we act as we intend homo do , if we feel and intend as homo do , then we suit our definition of the human , which is all we have . Perhaps we are finally robots , but we are still human for all virtual purposes .

Our real worry , then , is that being human is not what we collectively think it is — that we fail to live up to our own definition of being human . And that , I ’m afraid , is almost for certain honest . Cultures have had many dissimilar senses of the soul , of human essence , and of humanity , and all of them are either untimely or unproven . It is improbable that we have it correctly today . We are improbable to be robots , but neither are we what we think we are .
