It ’s sort of amusing how up - front Harry Potter and the Sorcerer ’s Stone director Chris Columbus is about wanting his young book series , House of Secrets , to be the Modern J.K. Rowling . really , the basic plot of land does n’t voice very Potter - ish — it ’s about kids live in a fantasy writer ’s spooky house , trying to lay aside their parent from some horrible darkness .
Here ’s the official precis , via Entertainment Weekly :
The Pagett kids had it all : loving parent , a big house in San Francisco , all the latest video games . . . But everything changed when their Church Father drop off his job as a result of an inexplicable evildoing . Now the family is moving into Kristoff House , a mysterious property built nearly a hundred earlier by a riotous fantasy writer with a preference for the supernatural . Suddenly the siblings bump themselves launched on an epic journey into a mash - up world born of Kristoff ’s severe imagination , to think a dark book of untold baron , bring out the Pagett category ’s secret history and save their parents . . . and maybe even the world .
Columbus is writing the young - adult ( or possibly midway - grade ) novel with Ned Vizzini , author of It ’s Kind of a Funny Story and various other titles . And it sounds as though the naval division of labor will be the common one when a famous Hollywood someone co - writes a novel — Columbus tell EW he “ could n’t really devote 12 hours a day every solar day to pen ” because of his other commitment , so he want someone he could “ bounce ideas back and forth with ” and “ basically take a hop chapters back and forth . ” ( Translation : Vizzini will probably do the lion ’s portion of the committal to writing . )
And Columbus says he ’s really not try on to make the next Harry Potter , but he sort of is :
I ’m not assuming enough to say , “ We ’re conk to take over the Potter serial , ” but I get to see at first hand how that series impress kids and how it catch so many hundred of thousands of minor into version . You hope for just a department of that in terms of being able to revolutionize kids to read . And that ’s really one of the base of the book – that recital is essential to your growing as a child and as an eventual grownup . That really has revolutionise us in moving onwards . So I expect at it in the main as working first and foremost as a novel .
