BeforeJames Gunn directedthe first Guardians of the Galaxy movie , he already had the plot forGuardians of the Galaxy Vol . 3 in his head . Now , to be fair , he did n’t know there would be a third film at the time ; back then , he did n’t even know if the first film would ferment . But before he ever shot a second of the 2014 pilot , Gunn knew the backstory andorigin of Rocket Raccoon , which he in the end convey to life in this workweek ’s Vol . 3 .
“ My pathway into the Guardians ab initio was Marvel talked to me about perhaps doing Guardians of the Galaxy,”Gunn told io9 in Los Angeles this week . “ They actually had some art already done with Rocket in it . And I thought , ‘ Boy , this can be goofy . This could be like Bugs Bunny in the eye of The Avengers . ’ I ’m like , ‘ How can I not make it goofy ? ’ ”
“ And I thought about , ‘ Well , okay , if there was a talking outer space raccoon , how would he have add up to be ? ’ And as I mused upon it , I begin thinking about how this was the sad brute in the population , and that was actually the seed to me for the entire Guardians trilogy . That was my path into it , this underpinning of just closing off and lugubriousness , and all of these graphic symbol are isolated and sad . So I knew what Rocket ’s backstory was from that minute before I had fall up with the respite of that stuff for Vol . 1 . It was the first thing I came up with . ”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol . 3 tells two tarradiddle at the same time . One is set in the present , and follow the current Guardians run low on an dangerous undertaking to save an ailing Rocket . The other traces Rocket ’s pedigree in flashback . It ’s kind of The Godfather Part II in that way . And Gunn explained why , despite him knowing Rocket ’s backstory for year , he held it until now .
“ I always thought it was a third motion picture thing because I thought we had to tell Peter Quill ’s story first and then get into Rocket ’s level , ” Gunn say . “ I recall the only question was , was it going to be a Rocket and Groot film or was it go to be Guardians 2 — because ab initio , I was going to do it as Rocket and Groot . ”
Gunnpreviously mentioneda Rocket and Groot motion-picture show several geezerhood ago , but that was go to be a short film . It was written , storyboarded , and some footage was even shoot as part of an elaborate but finally scrapped plan to introduce the Guardians to audience before the first film . However , it ’s unclear if the film Gunn is referring to here is that shortsighted cinema or another spin - off .
