When Paul Feig announced his new clowning series would premiere on Yahoo Screen , most people assumed the show — which is about a mathematical group of misfits lose in space — would just be an American copy of Red Dwarf . I for sure did . And then I watch over it , and discovered it was much , much more .

I ’m here to tell you that if you like scifi clowning in the slightest , you involve to watch Other blank ( all eight episodes of whichare wholly loose , by the way ) — or at least give it a endeavor , because it ’s not Red Dwarf . Yes , as mentioned above , the assumption is pretty much identical . But where Red Dwarf mine humor from that British custom of lovably abominable character and insane situations ( which is by no means a high-risk matter ! ) , Other Space is actually a much smarter science fiction show , and one with a lot more sum , too .
Let me excuse : While the crew of the Cruiser are goofball , they ’re not most as lovably awful as the work party of the Dwarf . new minted captain Stewart Lipinski is plenty sassy , but also uproariously eager to be hump by his crewmates , which let in : his sister Karen , who ’s incredibly acerb that her goofy short brother is no her gaffer ; sad sac Michael , who is the Cruiser ’s version of Britta from Community ; navigator Tina , who is vastly underqualified and only on table because Stewart has a crush on her ; Kent , the cold , logical Spock equivalent who is unbelievably weird in some eccentric ways that I ca n’t spoil ; Zalien , the brilliant engineer who ’s been completely fried by age next to radioactive space engines and is bet by MST3 K ’s Joel Hodgson , and who has a wisecracking robot companion voiced by Trace “ Crow ” Beaulieu ( seriously , if you ’re any sort of an MST fan , you involve to start view Other Space yesterday ) and more .
Where Red Dwarf mine humor from its graphic symbol ’ incompetency and awfulness to each other , Other Space primarily draws laugh from their relationship . It ’s a different dynamic — not better , necessarily , but not risky , either .
