Mathew Orlov started his solar day as an angler only to terminate it as a surgeon . Sort of . The clever fisher pitch 98 sevengill shark whelp via " vitamin C - section " after their mother was killed by another marauder .

“ Caught a 2.71 - meter [ 9 - metrical foot ] 7 gill shark today , it was attack by another shark on the style up , " said Orlov in aFacebook post . " It fall out to be a pregnant female , we ended up take out and turn 98 puppy , yes that ’s good 98 , I could n’t conceive it myself . "

fish off of Australia ’s priggish coast , Orlov says the shark was not targeted –   it was trip up on a little hook think for fish – and was already bushed when he pulled it aboard . Surprisingly ,   its venter was still locomote after he laid   it on the boat ’s deck . Orlov said " inherent aptitude " told him what to do .

" I have caught   shark   for nutrient before , so knew the chassis quite well , " he told IFLScience . To the tune of Usher’sYeah ! , Orlov did what any honorable angler   might . He   began   slice   through the shark ’s abdominal cavity to remove single pups from the female parent ’s womb , counting each as it came   out and then   sending it off into the ocean . The full " procedure " took nine minutes .

“ This seven gill was attacked by a bigger shark on the way up , hence why it ’s dead . But at least we ’ve get puppies to survive , ” Orlov says in the video below .

Named for their seven gills , these primitive sharks ( Notorynchus cepedianus)areovoviviparous ,   mean they produce eggs inside their consistency   and give birth to live immature . The eggs hatch inside the mother , which the little shark feed off of . Typically , sevengill shark   willbirthbetween 80 and 100 pups after a 12 - calendar month maternity , survey by a year - farseeing recovery . With a life of up to 50 years , sevengills have the potential drop to birth K of pups . The pups ’ selection typically depends on their mother making it to full terminus . In this case , the shark pups do n’t appear to be attached to a yolk , which biologists say could stand for they have a chance .

“ That ’s not rare   –   cutting baby out of a dead or dying mama shark , normally when they are caught as by-catch , ” Hawaii - based nautical piscary life scientist Lauren Sauer told IFLScience . “ Typically , Pisces strain to pump out as many babies as possible in monastic order for some to survive . shark do n’t really raise their youthful . They areborn knowingwhat   to do . ”

The gone female parent of 98 might not have seen her young pups off , but Orlov allege she did feed his kinfolk .
