Last week we covered theunfortunate awfulnessof Buffy ’s HD remastering , and it have me thinking – even if Buffy had gotten the treatment it rightly deserves , is it something that require to be done in the first place ?

Now obviously Buffy ’s remastering is n’t your average remaster , in term of its less than stellar quality , but even then , it ’s still a pretty consummate admonisher that sometimes you ca n’t chop and change old TV to make it look like it ’s shiny and new again so easily . Sure , it ’s easy enough to say that Fox just did a regretful job – but even if Buffy had get a good remastering ( sans frightening CGI and the occasional cameraman being kept on silver screen , of course of action ) , a widening of Buffy ’s original 4:3 frame would go against theoriginal intentionsof its creator , Joss Whedon . These old shows are production of their sentence , from a creative rack point – and by remove that context from them , you removing part of the show itself . sure as shooting , it ’s dainty to see shiny version of our best-loved honest-to-god series , but in a way it feel like you ’re losing something by doing it .

Then there ’s extensive remasters that go beyond upgrading the optic quality of something and outright editing it – George Lucas ’ much maligned tweak to the Star Wars movies , for example , has long been a bane of rooter who just want the original variation released on home formats . That ’s not just removing context from the original , but going back and actively change it . Unlike Whedon , that ’s the actual creator ’s selection to do so , but still , that comes at the hurt of fans who fondly remember the original films they learn in the theatre – specially as accession to the original version is difficult to do . It ’s get rid of a whole different sort of context to the one Buffy ’s HD remastering removes , but it ’s a context removed nevertheless – perhaps even a more extreme one , even if it fare from Lucas ’ own design for his creations .
For me , the context of a piece of metier – the time it was made , the way it was tear or present – has always been an crucial aspect of revalue it . I think it ’s the literature student within , that desire to understand the environs and circumstance in which something was made . Although for literature studies that context is different as it ’s historical , it ’s not something that can really than chop and changed and ‘ remastered ’ , for media like old TV shows that sort of circumstance is still just important to my appreciation of it . It gives a sensation of time and place to media , informs my vital understanding of it . Especially in the context of something like Whedon ’s approach to Buffy – where the technical ‘ limitation ’ of TV was something that help create and inform the show ’s aesthetic and the way it was framed – it becomes all the more important . Any sort of remastering , even if it ’s one that merely makes something clearer or if it ’s something as panoptic as what ’s happened to Buffy , go bad into part of removing that context is off something that is important to me .
Then again , there ’s correct room of move about a remaster , that may remove that original context of use that I appreciate in my approach to something , but are still close to the root material in such a way that that contextual absence seizure is n’t as notable – such as the Star Trek blu - ray releases . There ’s newfangled CG effects , yes , but they ’re mostly close to their original – and at least from a cinematographic perspective , little has been interchange to The Next Generation or The Original Series ’ expression in their remastering that while you ’re getting a clean , newer version of it , it still retains some of that original context and it ’s original format . The people behind it even run short so far as toexplicitly showpeople how extensive remastering ( such as changing to a widescreen formatting ) was not only out of the question , but against the spirit of the remastering process itself . It ’s the best way of going about the remastering older medium – it gives people the chance to own it on current format , and at the same clip it does n’t inherently change something about that medium that aids admiration of it from a more critical perspective .

Where do you remain firm on it – obvious laziness of Buffy ’s HD remastering apart , are you okay with more extensive remasters of old appearance or movies , even if it means losing the context of the way it was to begin with format when you first saw it ? Or are you a purist that just want the original to be conserve , regardless of the formatting its appearing on ?
