If you ’ve ever spent time in the far reach of the U.S. , you ’re probably conversant with the deer rack — a uniquely improvised , homemade shelter that gives hunters refuge , warmheartedness , and a clear view . Though they ’re design to be invisible , photographerJason Vaughnseeks them out , find and snap dozens of the complex body part across rural Wisconsin .
Vaughn is a Madison , Wisconsin - free-base fine artistic creation lensman whose work focuses on life in the Midwest . For a project name Hide , he wanted to document the unique architecture of cervid stands around the state — from haphazard plywood shacks to snug , fully - equip dwelling on stilts . “ It commence as a commentary on Wisconsin ’s hunting tradition , using deer stand as a metaphor for the modify value of the sport , ” heexplains . Hunting is declining in Wisconsin and across the Midwest — and with it , so are the often very luxuriant deer stands that have been passed down through family for generations .
But midway through the undertaking Vaughn , then 32 and the sire of a three calendar month - old child , was diagnose with Leukemia — and Hide set out to take on other dimensions .
Some people delineate build the stands as something permanent that could be passed to the next contemporaries , especially sons who would inherit the country … Having to face mortality to unexpectedly made me come back to the undertaking with a new perspective on the idea of permanency and impermanency . Ultimately , Hide became my reflexion on legacies and kinfolk , my court to the state that has become my domicile , and a story about accept change .
