high-pitched - upgrade building construct from woods arehavingabit of a moment . And that pray an important question : could the Empire State Building , the quintessential skyscraper , be built using forest ?
Finnish forestry company Metsä Wood teamed up with Canadian architectMichael Greento tackle that question , as part of Metsa ’s Plan B project . The last concept is for a wooden building that is the same tiptop , story peak , and pillar spacing , but with design changes made to admit the structural differences between steel and wood .
As you might imagine , raw wooden beams wo n’t cut it for a giant skyscraper . So , the design call for wood read from young Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , glued together into enormous gore , 8 feet by 64 foundation . Perhaps most astonishingly , this wooden material ( call Kerto ) performs well in font of a fire , meet the EN 1995 - 1 - 2 standard , and in some cases outgo concrete :

To reach the fire rating postulate for 102 fib building , additional ardor security would still be required in the form of sprinklers , and wallboard , but many parts of the Sir Henry Wood structure could stay exposed . In contrast , the brand structure of the Empire State Building needs to be fully protected by insulation , drywall , stone and other fire resistant materials to provide safe resistance to firing .
The full concept design for the projection is over on Metsä ’s website , with techical detail and construction programme coming in the next few week . [ MetsäviaArchDaily ]
