In this week ’s instalment , “ Fugitive of the Judoon , ” the BBC ’s Dr. Who made history by casting a dim woman , Jo Martin , as the Doctor for the first time in the serial ’ 57 - class chronicle . permit ’s talk about it .
One of the biggest changesshowrunner Chris Chibnallbrought to his run as brain of thelong - running sci - fi classicwas infusing the show with more variety than ever before . While nuWho commence in 2005 with the first Black go back character in Mickey Smith ( Noel Clarke ) , the first Black fellow in Martha Jones ( Freema Agyeman ) , and a few other guest and recurring characters of colour , that diversity cool down off during Steven Moffat ’s run from 2010 to 2017 . Even when the characters were of diverse backgrounds and intimate identities , the show did the characters a ill service by killing them off . ( Danny Pink , played by Samuel Anderson , andBill Potts , played by Pearl Mackie , both ironically die the same way : They ’re turned into Cybermen ) . To many fans of color , these exit left an amazing taste in our backtalk compare to the treatment of whitened characters on the show , whose exits often felt far less traumatic .

When Chibnall occupy over as showrunner in 2018 , he seemed to make a big tip of the grandness of diversity both in front ofand behind the camera . Two of the familiar for the retiring two season are people of coloring — Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole . A few installment have been written , for the first time ever , by writers of color : Malorie Blackman , who co - write “ Rosa ” with Chibnall ; and Vinay Patel , who co - drop a line “ Demons of the Punjab . ” Patelreturnedto conscientious objector - spell this time of year ’s now history - making episode “ Fugitive of the Judoon . ”
The season 11 episodes portion out with American Black history ( though spell by a calamitous British author ) and the segmentation of India , both specific cultural moment that benefit from having a writer closer to them than Chibnall alone . We ’ve also had more South Asiatic theatrical than ever before , admit the fantastic reveal at the top of this season thatthe Master would now be played by Sacha Dhawan . And in a move to top all moves , this calendar week ’s installment usher in a Black woman , play by Jo Martin , not just as a Time Lord , but as the Doctor herself . It ’s still unreadable how or where in the Doctor ’s timeline she comes from , but she ’s here , she ’s ours , and nerdy clothing stores comfortably organize to sell her turnout .
All of these welcome addition aside , these retiring two season under Chibnall ’s direction have n’t been perfect . His premiere sequence , “ The Woman Who fall From Earth , ” stick in an older Black cleaning woman named Grace ( Sharon D. Clarke ) as a possible companion , and she was awesome . solid , confident , audacious , and exactly the kind of person who belongs on the TARDIS . But midway through the instalment , fans of the show watching live start to see that she would n’t come through the episode . I ’ll never forget watching my Twitter timeline dissolve into dismay at the realisation that Grace was about to die . And indeed , she does , to further the aroused adhesion and narrative electric discharge for two men , her grandson Ryan and her husband , Graham . Grace ’s fridgingwas an crappy startto a new season , new Doctor , and raw showrunner , especially after Bill ’s pretty grisly and disappointing endingnot too long before .

But with Doctor Who bringing on Blackman for “ Rosa ” and Patel for “ Punjab , ” I was going to give Chibnall the benefit of first season growing pain sensation . However , this season we ’ve seen the death of two more Black cleaning woman , both on - screen and implied off - screen . There was Barton ’s mother ( Blanche Williams ) in the premiere , who waskilled by her own son for no existent narrative verse or reason , and in thevery next episode , Bella ( Gia Ré ) , a false hotel critic attend for retaliation on her alienated mother . She was left on a planet , beleaguer by the enemy , and the Doctor , despite Ryan ’s protest , did n’t even consider go back to render to save her . The audience is leave behind to assume or decide that she somehow survive ? But given the show ’s track record — three in a row under Chibnall , and four in a row when you view Bill — I happen myself skeptical and beginning to cogitate Chibnall had a thing against Black womanhood who were n’t Rosa Parks .
These end had stack up in my thinker , so when I saw the preview for “ Fugitive of the Judoon , ” I decided this was it . If this fresh Black character reference died , I might have to twine up on Chibnall in my TARBIS ( Time and Relative Blackness in Space ) and have some abrasive dustup with him . But this time , he exceeded my expectations and surprise us all . The new Black adult female is The Doctor . It even said so in the credits , in case there were any doubts .

She ’s here , and I need her turnout and the Funko Pop ASAP . I love her zip ( like Donna meets River Song ? ) and Jo Martin was fantastic at switching between the confused Ruth and the ego - assured Doctor . The tension between Ruth Doctor and Thirteen was well played without being too stereotypically bitchy , with the expected value of them working well together in the future set up perfectly . I am buzzing with anticipation .
But all of this does not mean that Chibnall is off the hook . The Ruth Doctor could become yet another disastrous woman we see die on covert , or result assumed dead . Regeneration is a primal component to Doctor Who ’s principal theatrical role after all , so I candidly expect her to conk and regenerate , as all Time Lords do . But it would be less jarring if I had n’t been on bound because of the last few character deaths . Yes , Doctor Who is a show that deals with biography or destruction constantly , but you ca n’t just take each instalment singularly . You have to look at the patterns you are creating . ( Just like everyone note that Yaz has been teleported somewhere three times this time of year . Girl ca n’t cease getting beamed up ! )
So while I am thrilled at the prospect of a blackened charwoman as the Doctor , and design to give the BBC as much money as I can to show that I want all her merch , I am still not quick to make Chibnall the variety Rex . Even though he ’s get a deal of ack-ack from the anti - PC police for being excessively “ woke , ” I line up that screaming , because I know plenty of masses who are harassed he ’s not pushing the clit far enough . ( Give us Thasmin , you cowards ! ) I also wish Chibnall would do a little more with the PoC characters we already have — Ryan and Yaz have gotten no new character development in any of the five episodes this season , and it ’s really glaring .

I trust that the next time we see Ruth Doctor , it is n’t the last . The creation , with all its dimension , is panoptic and there ’s way for 13 official iterations of the Doctor , plus the War Doctor , plus the Valeyard , plus 10.5 , plus Ruth Doctor . Let her have many adventures in time and space . Deal with the fact that she presents as a Black woman , just like the show ’s dealt with Thirteen being a ( snowy ) woman . Give her the merch and extra - canonic stories she merit . Comics . Big Finishaudios .
Giving us a Black distaff Doctor is n’t the ending of the road for delegacy , it ’s just the beginning . Do n’t do in it .
