The belated installment of Legion is a mind stumble . Okay , sure , that ’s like tell water system is wet — Legion is always trippy — but this one actually goes inside the nous of characters other than David , rifle by their layer and abilities to show them at their most basic core . This episode also has what could be one of the greatest flashbacks I ’ve ever seen on television .
In “ Chapter 11 , ” David ( Dan Stevens ) and Syd are on the hunt for the monk of the Mi - Go social club , with Syd take on the form of Earth ’s most - vicious hunter : a cute kitty-cat cat . As she drift the halls of Division Three ’s home office — which I ’ve coined the Honeycomb Hideout — she comes across an emergency situation . The monk was hiding in plain sight among the other Catalyst victims , and is now on the loose . As the Honeycomb Hideout is target on lockdown , David head into the astral aeroplane to take Farouk for his service locate the monk , since the Thelonious Sphere Monk is able-bodied to shield himself from David ’s mind .
Here we get an first-class scene between David and Lenny , still trapped in Farouk ’s genial clutch . She long for something — sex , drug , death — anything to break free of this fashionable hell she ’s stuck within . Lenny tries and fails to die multiple times as David gossip with Farouk about the monk . Farouk does n’t care . Then again , neither does David . Pretty telling , if you postulate me .
It ’s really punishing to feel understanding for someone like the Shadow King , who preyed on David for his entire life and now has taken refuge inside Oliver ’s head . But here , Farouk seduce a pretty damn good case for why he ’s not the villain David cogitate he is — first comparing David ’s father Charles “ Professor X ” Xavier to a colonizer , “ a blank homo ” who removed him from his can without caring about the branching , and then present himself as a refugee who only hop from body to body to survive . The Shadow King might be an unreformable colossus , but he does not wish being called a villain . I may not gibe with Farouk , and I still think he ’ll say anything to get what he desire , but he ’s not unfit at make his point .
As David leave the astral plane , no closer to a solution to his Thelonious Sphere Monk problem than he was going in , Farouk lays a truth turkey on him : He ’s not responsible for spreading the Catalyst that renders people paralytic ( other than their chattering tooth ) , the Thelonious Sphere Monk is . After finding Cary , the only other adult survivor in the whole Honeycomb Hideout , David pass out in hunting of Syd , whose future self is projecting a message of “ precipitation ” to foreclose her present ego from being pin down inside her own mind . You see , the Catalyst creates a maze inside the brain , where victims pull away into a place dominated by their kernel need and desire . Ptonomy , the first victim David obtain , yearns to be in a world where he can forget ( admonisher : his power is photographic computer memory ) .
Then , we enter Melanie Bird ’s snarl , presented as a text escapade secret plan where Melanie is in complete control . It ’s a howling sequence that turns words into works of art — and I ca n’t resist loving any show where characters shout command prompting at each other like “ climb down the run ” or “ no , look around first . ” We also see the return of that eldritch freak - on - wheels thing from Melanie ’s vapor visual modality , which is referred to in - game as a Minotaur . David render and fail to force Melanie out of her mind labyrinth , but the only way out is to roleplay . Her biz , her rule . So he sits at the computer and tells her a account , one that reflects where she ’s been and what she ’s always wanted . I transcribe it because I ca n’t do it Department of Justice :

there was a girl with no dreams
she lived in the right now
then she met a boy
and his dream became hers
except what he did n’t realize
was she already had a dream
and that ambition was to
be worry free
David does n’t have long to observe this victory of empathy before he ’s nail by the Thelonious Monk and hale to journey into his judgement , to memorise the tragedy that betide his order . This whole flashback only direct up a few moment of the episode , but it ’s fabulously evocative . It not only win in present us to the Mi - Go Order and their connection to Farouk , but it also create tone of latent hostility , anxiety , and apprehension that I ’m ineffectual to shake .
sooner in the episode , we ’d get a biref glimpse at how Farouk was defeat , leading to his eubstance being taken to the monastery of the Mi - Go Order . unluckily , Farouk ’s consistency can not be killed — so it does n’t take long before the beat begins . A slow , methodical thump that not only resonates throughout the total monastery , but also appears to overrun their judgment . Slowly , the monks start to go mad , some going so far as to attend themselves to escape the perpetual and consistent randomness . Those that stay spill victim to the Catalyst . In the same vein as the cheerleader “ tic ” chronicle narrated by Jon Hamm , their minds create a physical reaction that begin to spread . The only one unaffected is our Thelonious Sphere Monk — who , in the net moments of the flashback — chooses to allow for his brothers behind .
The lonesome subsister of a tragedy his order did not sign up for , the monk takes control of the admiral to demand the “ weapon system ” that can shoot down Farouk . The admiral ’s corporate take a firm stand the weapon does not be , but Melanie conceive that it ’s David . However , the monk knows the truth : David is helping the Shadow King . Before he can spill the bean plant , David transports the two of them to the roof of the Honeycomb Hideout so he can involve the localization of Farouk ’s body . But the monk ca n’t share that . He bonk that would mean the end of everything , and that all his brothers had sacrifice would have been in vain . He ’d rather die , which he does by jumping off the roof , in a heartrending end to an even more heartbreaking story . These monks lose everything to fulfil a hope — and in their final moments none of their actions mattered , as the key fruit to fix everything had already betrayed them .
The episode ends with David traveling inside Syd ’s brain so as to save her , with the next episode looking to spend a lot of clock time search Syd ’s life sentence and floor — which is delinquent , in my opinion . It ’s still hard to say who ’s in the right here , as even David begins to doubt whether next Syd is everything she claim to be . But it ’s clear he ’ll do anything for love , even if it kills everyone else .
Meanwhile , the ceaseless thumping of Farouk attempt to escape his coffin is still resonating in my header , even now .
Assorted Musings:
The latest “ tutorial ” tell by Jon Hamm is establish on a true account . The cheerleaders shown coming down with unmanageable shoulder tic harkens back to the mystery of18 cheerleadersin Le Roy , New York , who all came down with outspoken and strong-arm tic in 2011 . The grounds of their affliction is still strange .
I loved how they used the chalkboard drawing from last season inside Farouk ’s sunglasses to symbolize the fight between him and Charles Xavier go on inside his mind . It was a cagy call - back and help viewer see what was fall out during that very quiet conniption .
The phantom limb makes another cameo .
Before Ptonomy and everyone else fell dupe to the Catalyst , Ptonomy ’s mind seemed to be obtrude upon by that creepy black goo chicken thing , and Cary observe the guck inside his mind maze . I ’m guessing something else is go on to Ptonomy that ’s pass to have bigger leg later .
Cary and Kerry ’s family relationship induce some good geographic expedition in this installment , as Cary teach her how to eat , employ the can , and other thing she ’s never had to do before . Her falling victim to the Catalyst and him vanish get me question how “ real ” Cary has been follow their ordeal — which could explicate why he survived the Catalyst . I ’m reckon David ’s go to act a major role in fixing their one / division issue .
