Did you know that Aquaman ( 2018 ) is the highest grossingDC Universemovie ? At least according toThe Hollywood Reporter , it is the “ high-pitched grossing ” DC movie of all time at 1.148 billion dollars . Which , utterly bonkers turn over what a weirdover - developedriot of CGI that film was . And of course the sequel , Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom , amount on the heel of three turnovers at Warner Bros. looks like it ’s already head into rough waters .
THR reports that the film just envelop it ’s third round of reshoots withJason Momoain New Zealand just before SAG - AFTRA called a strike . Three turn of reshoots is improbably expensive and relatively rarified , especially for monolithic films like Aquaman . Additionally , the cause behind these reshoots are too grim .
“ While a timeline is not exculpated , from summer 2022 to the rootage of 2023 , The Lost Kingdom underwent two rounds of reshoots and held several uninspiring psychometric test covering , ” writes Borys Kit at THR . Uninspired screenings ! Screenings that were plainly so speculative that one of the Warner Bros. brass — Pamela Abdy — apparently got in the edit kiosk in an elbow grease to fix it . reader , it is pertinent to order you that the Abdy cut seemingly “ tally lower than the old adaptation . That led to another round of reshoots . ” Yikes .

So to tally there are several edits , a handful of leaders , new leaders under Peter Safran and James Gunn , three reshoots , and , also , a note that the issue of how to desegregate Batman into this pic was patently a problem . But this studio apartment has dump so much money on this yield that if it ’s not a pixilated dog of a movie , it will be by the time it comes out … supposedly in December this year .
Oh , there ’s also an additional complication , throw away in as kind of an aside in this clause , which is that “ every frame of the movie postulate visual effects , another major cost . ” Not every scene . Every frame . This is perfectly banana amount of work — even if , unavoidably that employment is going to stray wildly from touch - ups and object removal to the sort of la-di-da VFX work necessitated by the blockbuster superhero movie political machine — particularly when VFX houses areoverworked , underpaid , and also un - unionizedat a moment when co - ordinated labor movements are have their moment .
So while reshoots are done , post - production , VFX , redaction , intermixture , so off and so on are all still being worked on . If all this tweaking , all right - tuning , filmmaking - by - citizens committee results in a gleam pearl in the DC poll , maybe it ’ll be worth it . But I doubt it .

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG - AFTRA strikes . Without the DoL of the writers and actor currently on strike , the movie being covered here would n’t exist .
