The contest website explain :

The Splitting Color illusion is all about how we perceive colors . We start off with two selfsame , flickering colored stripes that remain unchanged throughout the demonstration . However , dissimilar surroundings will make these stripes look entirely unlike . When the stripe is flanked by a lily-livered / patrician pattern , drifting to the left , it change appearance , and looks scarlet and cyan , drifting to the right , while the same stripe , flank by a red / cyan pattern drifting to the right , suddenly face yellow and blue , swan to the leftfield . This deception express that one and the same target can look completely unlike depending on its surroundings .
Much of this magic has to do with how the mastermind changes its assumption about color when contrasts and surrounding colour transfer relative to the full visual field . Like changes to luminosity , context matters in perception .
2d place operate to Kokochi Sugihara ’s “ Ambiguous Garage Roof , ” while third prize was award to Michael Pickard ’s “ The Day it rain on Lowry . ” All 10 contest finalist can be foundhere .
