While we celebrate the ghouls and goblin of October , Elaine M. Will ’s webcomicLook Straight Aheaddepicts a different sort of repulsion . High school fourth-year Jeremy lose his connection with reality as he falls into the grasp of bipolar disorder .
The only well thing going on in Jeremy Knowles ’ life story is that he ’s ten months away from graduating from gamy school . He ca n’t resist the cackle jocks who bemock the other student . He ’s in love with his best friend ’s girlfriend , although he can scarce get up the courage to talk to her , and his apathy toward schooltime is causing tension between him and his father . finally , though , it becomes light that there is something more behind Jeremy ’s bother connect with the citizenry around him than teenager angst .
Jeremy ’s vexation with the schoolhouse ’s jocks turns into paranoid delusions . He start having violent ebullition at school . Psychedelic misfires in his mind grow into a dangerous sense of grandeur , and the electronegative feelings swirling around his head immix into a diabolical fauna that seems to follow him around . Jeremy is ill , and it takes some sentence before anyone realizes what is going on .
On her website , Will explains that she was inspired to write Look Straight Ahead because of her own experience with genial illness , and while Jeremy is not Will , she does gird him with an artistic power that both provide him with solacement and grant his experience physical form . cartoon strip can be a powerful culture medium for portray mental illness , and here we ’re take in to experience Jeremy ’s delusions from the inside rather than judge what everyone else is seeing . Jeremy does n’t excuse himself or hold his actions ; he simply narrates his experiences as they take place .
But it is ultimately an affirmative comic , if sometimes a painful one . Jeremy can go back , he can get by his malady . But it will take work , a willingness to get better , and the empathy of the hoi polloi around him to chase away the sometimes tempt head game inside his intellect .
