Yes , technically this is a “ real ” photo from World War I. But if the writing looks a small too perfect for the center of a battlefield , that ’s because it is . This photo is actually a composite image .
An Australian photographer by the name ofFrank Hurleytook the photo . Or , more accurately , exposure . By combining different images — in this case the swooping airplane above and the field of battle below — Hurley created photos that failed to represent what was “ actually ” happening during the course of the warfare .
Hurley actually get into a fair bit of bother for his images , and they stay incredibly controversial today . But he did n’t just create composite images , he would also present re - act and flat - out fabricate guess . Hurley maintain his photographic creations , arguing that they represent the warfare far better than the circumscribed technology of the time could ever capture . Our last photo shows a Japanese bomb explode on the flight of stairs deck of the USS Enterprise in 1942 — a turkey that supposedly killed the lensman who took this dead reckoning . It did n’t .

Apparently the photo was inappropriately labeled when it wasarchivedby the U.S. military .
A photographer appoint Robert Frederic Read did become flat that day , along with 37 other valet aboard the USS Enterprise . But he was n’t the man who took this finical photograph .
