Some of the most dramatic landscapes in America are the hardest to really know — whether thanks to swarm of holidaymaker or sentence limits , chatter a natural admiration can sense like a cattle call . That ’s whyReuben Wu , the Chicago - based photographer , chooses to go in the dead of night .
Wu is originally from the UK , though as a member of electro actLadytron , he criss - crossed the United States multiple time . But , as he says over e-mail , the speed of the tour meant they never really get to stop and look around . “ While I get a peachy tour of the metropolis where we play , I only regard a glimpse of the land in between , ” he explains . “ I remember many instances where I recognise things from the route but could n’t finish due to our docket . ”
So when their last duty tour pop off down , Wu plan to construct his stride — this clip , as a lensman . Working with Polaroid moving picture , he navigated back to some of the most famous attractor in the West , from the Badlands to the Great Prismatic Spring . But this time around , he visited after these sites had closed or before they had opened , often using an app to reckon when the moonshine would be the bright :
For me , the experience of these course beautiful places is dulled by the presence of crowds — and the only style to fully have them is when everyone has pass away home . Under these conditions , navigating and photographing can be hard , serious and need some preparation , so I apply a fascia Global Positioning System and my iPad miniskirt to help me map my journey in the dark , and also my iPhone to work out when and where the lunation will make an coming into court ( my only source of ignitor ) .
